Project for Pride in Living Inc. (PPL) has teamed up with an experienced architectural firm and general contractors to complete the first new single family home in the Hawthorne EcoVillage. Located at 400 31st Avenue North in Minneapolis, the home was the first house to be built within the EcoVillage development and the first home to achieve 4 green building certifications including U.S. Green Building Councils Leadership for Energy and Efficient Design (LEED) Platinum certification. The second infill home located at 3035 6th Street N. will be just as energy efficient and it will be built to meet Enterprise Green Communities and Energy Star Guidelines.

Hawthorne EcoVillage is a model demonstration project using best practices in community-based development, neighborhood revitalization and sustainable green development. The project consists of a four-block area in the Hawthorne neighborhood in north Minneapolis bounded by Lowry Avenue on the north, 30th Avenue on the South, Lyndale Avenue on the west and 4th Street North on the East.

Hawthorne EcoVillage is a multi-phase project utilizing green building design and construction practices that will also address sustainable site planning, urban reforestation, water/energy efficiencies, conservation of materials and improved indoor air quality. The goal of the Hawthorne EcoVillage is to create and maintain a neighborhood that is a model of sustainability. The emphasis on sustainability and the EcoVillage name were the creation of the Hawthorne residents. As the project progresses, the project partners and EcoVillage neighbors continue to development and refine a shared vision for the development. The development is preserving existing homes, building new single family homes, mixed income living opportunities, and putting the urban landscape to best use to nurture a healthy, sustainable community.

The Hawthorne EcoVillage development represents a shared vision among Hawthorne neighborhood residents and leaders, community agencies and the City of Minneapolis. This project is a partnership of Hawthorne Neighborhood Council (HNC), Project for Pride in Living (PPL), Northside Home Fund and The Family Housing Fund.
